Get ready for Thanksgiving dinner 2013 at Fat Angelos

Thanks to 為食小豆 and Fat Angelo's for inviting me to this Thanksgiving dinner preview.

Thanksgiving is an important festival to the Americans.

I found out about Thanksgiving dinner through reviews in 2011 but since the reviews were written afterwards, I missed it and had to wait until 2012 when I tried my first Thanksgiving meal at Blue Smoke BBQ.

I did not see any reviews on Thanksgiving for Fat Angelo's so I did not know they had it as well.

I love Thanksgiving dinners because it is similar to our British Christmas dinner with roast turkey and stuffing.

Fat Angelo's used to be one of the restaurants I go for comfort foods.
There used to be a lot of branches in Central, Wan Chai and TKO which have not closed down.

Since then I have not dined at Fat Angelo's because I have been exploring food all over Hong Kong.

++++++++
Gammon ham
{Juicy thick cut gammon ham that was not too salty}

++++++++
Cranberry sauce
{I loved this sauce which was amazing with the turkey, whole plump cranberries that were not too sweet.}

++++++++
Juicy turkey
{The white meat was amazingly juicy and soft}

++++++++
Stuffing
{Not the same as British stuffing but I liked the herbs and pieces of bread in it}

++++++++
Candied Yams
{Delicious sweet and mushy yams}

++++++++
Vegetables

{a nice variety of greens, cauliflower and broccoli}
++++++++
Mashed potato

{creamy buttery mash}
++++++++
Pumpkin pie
{lovely pumpkin pie with a strong kick of cinammon}

++++++++
Pasta with white truffle (this was not part of Thanksgiving but we tried it as well).
{The white truffle was strong and there were generous slices of it, however the sauce was too creamy for my liking}

I will come back and try their new items which were not on the menu before.

Wicked witch of the East 2013 at Lab Made

Again I was back for more icecream because of the new flavours.
This time I had the wicked witch which was for Halloween.

When I got there, all their staff were in costumes.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Wicked witch:

Basically it was white chocolate icecream topped with coconut and a witch's finger (biscuit baked by Labmade).
[as well as Labmade, Taipan bakery are also doing a Halloween special of witch finger biscuits with an almond representing a fingernail as well, but the colour is not green.]
I am not a white chocolate lover but the white chocolate icecream was to die for because the milky white chocolate taste was strong but not sickly and it melts in your mouth and becomes liquid milk.
Within the icecream there were delicious crispy almond bits and I loved the abundance of coconut because it gave the icecream more depth.

Marinated pork knuckle @ Joy Hing

Joy Hing Roasted Meat (Wan Chai)

I have not been here for ages but recently someone asked me to recommend a place for Roast pork hence I recommended this place.

I decided to give it a revisit to check out the roast pork again and this time I tried their marinated item as well because it is nice as well according to the reviews.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Marinated pork knuckle:

The pork knuckle tasted ok, the flavouring was not too strong or sweet but it was not soft enough.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Roast pork:

The roast pork was a bit dry and lean this time, there were only a few pieces too, so hopefully the person I recommended will get a better cut that is not too lean or fat.

A really nice baked mashed potato 超好味 & 超感動

Had a tasting in the afternoon at the Gold Coast which meant there was no time for lunch and I did not even have breakfast that day.

I was so touched (超感動) that Ivycwk got me a baked mashed potato from Sheung Wan's Tin Lok bakery and brought it all the way to TST where we were going to take the coach to the Gold Coast. The experience was quite fun, just like a school trip!

I ate it before getting on the coach and it was really delicious (超好味)!!
It had some cheese, sliced ham and sweetcorn on top and the mash at the bottom was really nice and tasted like instant mash that was not too buttery.

The sauce that was mixed with the ham and sweet corn that tasted similar to Japanese mayonnaise with a hint of salad cream which had a lovely appetizing taste.
The mash was not too dry either.

There is a Tin Lok bakery in between CWB and WC which is in the middle of no-where, so it is difficult to go to that branch.

Relaxing lunch at Eden Rose

Eden Rose Restaurant (Causeway Bay)

Thanks to Eden Rose for inviting me again to try their lunch.

On my last tasting I tried their dinners which were good.

Lunch is slightly different, there is no service charge and the lunches range from $78-$108 including a soup/salad and a drink.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pumpkin soup:

The soup had a nice colour an smell, but it was slightly too creamy.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Panfried barramundi Filet with lemon butter:

The fish was filleted nicely and was intact with no bones.
It had a nice crispy pan fried skin but the sauce was quite creamy and I would have liked the taste of lemon in the lemon butter sauce to be stronger.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Stewed Ox tail in red wine:

The ox tail did not have much meat on it and it was quite fatty, the red wine sauce was nice and rich though.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Strawberry Napolean:

Usually Napoleons are just a rectangular slice but the shape of this one was like a rose which coincides with the name Eden Rose.
It was made with deliciously thin FILO pastry filled with custard, garnished with strawberries.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Lemon sorbet:

The lemon sorbet was refreshing and the sweetness and tartness of the lemon just right.
It was really creative they put the sorbet back on the lemon.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Hot chocolate:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Mocha:

It was a nice balance between coffee and chocolate.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Grilled dried fish roe at Tai O Village

Tai O is famous for quite a lot of things ranging from prawn paste, grilled squids, etc.
As you can get grilled squids everywhere I opted for the grilled fish roe.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Grilled fish roe:

Before it was served, he tried to persuade me to have chili oil on it because it might be a bit fishy, but I refused.
The fish roe was quite hard and coarse saturated with salt.
It was not as fishy as I expected but quite salty!
